Bay Scallop Season Opens in Fenholloway-Suwannee River Zone |
Harvesting Season Runs Through Labor Day with Specific Regulations |
The much-anticipated bay scallop harvesting season has commenced in the Fenholloway-Suwannee River Zone, offering both residents and visitors a chance to engage in this cherished activity along Florida's Nature Coast.
Spanning from June 15 through Labor Day, September 1, the season encompasses all state waters in Dixie County, parts of Taylor County—including the towns of Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee—and portions of Levy County.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages enthusiasts to partake in the season while adhering to established regulations to ensure sustainability and safety.
From June 15 to June 30, the daily bag limit is set at 1 gallon of whole bay scallops in the shell or 1 cup of shucked meat per person, with a vessel maximum of 5 gallons whole or 2 pints shucked.
Starting July 1 through Labor Day, the limits increase to 2 gallons whole or 1 pint shucked per person, and a vessel maximum of 10 gallons whole or 4 pints shucked.
Harvesting is permitted only by hand or using a landing or dip net; commercial harvesting remains prohibited.
Participants must possess a valid Florida saltwater fishing license unless exempt.
Safety is paramount during the season.
When diving, ensure you stay within 300 feet of a properly displayed divers-down flag in open water, and within 100 feet in rivers, inlets, or navigation channels.
Boaters should exercise caution, maintaining idle speed when within these proximities to protect both divers and marine habitats.
As the season progresses, local communities anticipate a boost in tourism, benefiting businesses and fostering community engagement.
Whether you're a seasoned scalloper or a newcomer eager to experience this coastal tradition, the Fenholloway-Suwannee River Zone offers a unique opportunity to connect with Florida's rich marine heritage.
Remember to follow all regulations, prioritize safety, and enjoy the bountiful waters responsibly. |
